My Platform

Gabe Johnson’s digging in!

Aloha. I’m Gabe Johnson and I’m running for the Maui County Council, Lāna’i seat. I am counting on your vote!

MY PLATFORM:

Working people deserve to live in a clean environment with a healthy economy.

Clean Environment:

Gabe Johnson supports agriculture

As an organic farmer I believe in Aloha Aina practices. Healthy lands make for healthy people. Maui County must ensure that local people are able to grow local. Specifically, Lāna’i needs and agricultural park, County funds need to be available to small farms, and invasive species need to be culled.

Injection wells:

The County was wrong to fight the findings of the EPA. I am pushing for better wastewater management to keep our reefs clean.

Healthy Economy:

Let’s face it, living in Maui County is expensive. The best way to make a resilient economy is to expand the middle class. The county can assist by helping working people. Affordable housing projects funded by local credit unions and built by nonprofits such as Americorp and Habitat for humanity can cut the costs significantly and keep our money on island.

Global issues on a local level:

The less fossil fuels we use the better The county can take the lead in reducing traffic and carbon emissions with a robust transportation department. Electric car stations, better bus service, and all methods of island travel will help Maui county stay green! It’s proven that green jobs help our economy.

Over my 15 years living on Lāna’i I’ve held many jobs and many roles. I love the islands of Maui Nui, it’s culture, and it’s beautiful people that am constantly learning from. I humble ask for your vote in the upcoming Maui County Council election.

Go to Transparency

Transparency

I am a strong advocate of District Voting. As it stands our city centers decide who gets elected. This is not very democratic. The people of Lana’i should be able to vote who represents them. Hana should vote for Hana, Wailuku should vote for Wailuku, etc. This is gerrymandering in our very own County and I am against it.

Go to Protect Resources

Protect Resources

I believe in the Public Trust Doctrine. The government’s responsibility is to do what is best for us, the people, when managing our Natural Resources. This is a binding agreement.

As it is now, large money interests are being served, certainly not the people. Presently the EPA has fined the County over sewage injection wells. This mismanagement has to stop.

Too long has the county ignored the people’s demands. We demand clean water. We demand clean soil. We demand to be heard.

Putting People First

Our families need homes, ocean access, parks and infrastructure. I want to partner with non profits such as Habitat for Humanity. I am impressed at what they are doing here on Lana’i and I would like for it to happen throughout the County.

Let’s explore alternative methods of housing such as duplexes, prefabricated housing, and using sustainable materials, such as bamboo.

Affordable Housing is an issue I feel strongly about and I will make it a priority.

Experience and Education

About Me

After college I was lucky enough to start working for the Japanese Government under the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program. I taught in Miyazaki Japan for 3 years where I studied Judo and the Japanese Language. After Japan, I continued my education attending the School for International Training in Brattleboro Vermont, where I studied Education. In 2003, I moved to Lahaina Hawaii and taught Japanese and English as a Second Language at Lahaina Intermediate School.

I moved to Lana’i in 2005 and have enjoyed many different jobs during my time here. I have worked at the Four Seasons, Expeditions Ferry, and I now work for Pulama Lana’i. My position here is the Invasive Species Technician. During my time here in Hawaii I have done much to protect our Resources, I am a member of the Lana’i Heritage Fishing Group, in which we are working hard to create a Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA) here on the island of Lana’i. I have also volunteered my time to the County as Vice Chair on the Commission for Americans With Disabilities Act. I was a strong advocate for our Kupuna here on Lana’i and also addressed our dismal unemployment rate of Peoples with Disabilities.

I have made Lana’i my home. As a single Father who’s daughter has been going to school here since preschool, I can honestly say that I love Lana’i. Aloha Lana’i!
